DRIVING

Older drivers are more apt to use seat belts, limit driving at night & during bad weather, & less likely to drive under the influence, according to the Centers for Disease Control & the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

Drivers over age 75 have more fatal crashes per miles driven. Risk rises with medication use, impaired vision, & impaired cognition. Errors occur more during merging, changing lanes, turning left, & at intersections.

Tips: Safe Driving by older drivers include:

Plan your drive.

Avoid distractions.

Open window slightly to better hear traffic.

GPS may be safer than map unless second person is navigator.

Allow adequate space between vehicles.

Be vigilant of pedestrians in dark clothing.

Your car insurance may offer programs for older drivers.

*When You Drive

Tips: Drugs (medications, supplements, herbs, or recreational) may impair your alertness, reaction time, judgment, cognition, due to causing confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, or vision changes. Find out if your drugs may do this. These span alcohol, allergy pills, pain medication, motion sickness, & overactive bladder medication.

Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles website

Oregon law ORS 813.010 specifies 0.08%or more blood alcohol, or intoxicating liquor, inhalant, or controlled substance constitutes driving under the influence.

This increases risk of a crash four-fold.

Below 0.08% still increases risk accidents.

*Signs To Stop Driving

GUNS(see also Self-Defense)

Tips: Lock-up any fire arms. Put safety lock on guns.Avoid access by grandchildren, or others.

Consider selling your guns to responsible party, giving to heirs now, or donating to a museum.

Consider changes in cognition, behavior, dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease), emotional state, eyesight, frailty, & reaction time in decision whether to retain guns.

Older people are less apt to be victim of violent crime. The elderly complete more suicides with guns.

VISION(See also Animals, Service)

Tips: Improve your visibility to others on dark days & nights by wearing white, pink, light blue, green, yellow, orange & reflective wear. Carry a flashlight. Your eyes need about 45 minutes for 80% recovery from bright to dim light. Cataracts worsen glare. Smoking worsens night vision.
